Epilepsy: Scientific Perspective and Bhutavidya in Ayurveda
What we commonly call 'Epilepsy' (Apasmara) is a condition characterized by loss of consciousness or body tremors caused by sudden disturbances in the communication system between brain cells. While modern medicine views this as a neurological disorder, Ayurveda analyzes it on both physical and mental levels.
What is Epilepsy?
According to Ayurveda, Apasmara (Epilepsy) is a temporary impairment of Smriti (memory), Buddhi (intellect), and Manas (mind). The symptoms manifest when the bodily humors—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—become imbalanced and affect the heart and the brain.
Bhutavidya and Epilepsy Treatment
Bhutavidya is one of the eight major branches (Ashtanga) of Ayurveda. Today, we refer to it as Ayurvedic Psychiatry or Mental Health Care. In this context, 'Bhuta' does not refer to supernatural entities, but rather to invisible pathogens, psychological stressors, and emotional traumas that afflict the mind.
The primary treatment methods for
Epilepsy in Bhutavidya include:
1. Daivavyapashraya Chikitsa (Spiritual Therapy):
This includes practices like chanting mantras, prayers, and rituals to instill self-confidence and mental peace. It helps in concentrating the mind and filling it with positive energy.
2. Yuktivyapashraya Chikitsa (Rational/Pharmacological Therapy):
This involves the logical application of medicines. Medicated ghees like Panchagavya Ghrita and Kalyanaka Ghrita are administered to strengthen the nerves in the brain. It also includes Shodhana (purification) treatments like Panchakarma to expel toxins from the body.
3. Sattvavajaya Chikitsa (Psychotherapy):
This is a counseling method aimed at controlling the patient's mind and liberating them from unnecessary fears and stress. The condition can be managed by redirecting thoughts and emotions positively.
4. Dhumapana and Nasya:
Inhalation of medicinal smoke (Dhumapana) and administration of herbal oils through the nostrils (Nasya) help in regaining consciousness and clearing obstructions in the brain's pathways.
Points to Remember
Epilepsy is not a curse or a possession; it is a physical-mental condition that can be effectively managed with proper treatment. Bhutavidya is a noble medical science that purifies both the mind and the body.
By integrating correct Ayurvedic medicines, Yoga, and the mental purification techniques mentioned in Bhutavidya, we can effectively combat Epilepsy.
